short for complement S protein. S protein is an inhibitor of the membrane attack complex of complement and has been purified by Podack and Müller-Eberhard (1979). S protein binds to protein complexes in the terminal stages of both the complement and coagulation pathways and is found at high concentrations in human plasma (Podack and Müller-Eberhard, 1979; Jenne et al, 1985; Dahlbäck and Podack, 1985) . Jenne and Stanley (1988) have cloned the cDNA encoding S protein and shown that the encoded protein is identical with Vitronectin.
NOTE: This factor should not be confused with Protein S.
