[Sperm Agglutination Antigen-1] SAGA-1 is a highly acidic glycoprotein localized on the entire surface of ejaculated human spermatozoa. The protein is secreted by the epididymis and is localized over the entire human sperm plasma membrane (Diekman et al, 1997). It is recognized by mouse monoclonal antibody S19, identified originally as an antibody with multiple sperm-inhibitory activities [Diekman et al, 1997; Anderson et al, 1991; Mahoney et al, 1991) (Diekman et al, 1997). S19 binding to SAGA-1 rapidly agglutinates spermatozoa, blocks cervical mucus penetration, and interactions between sperms and oocytes (Anderson et al, 1987; Mahoney et al, 1991).
