[small integrin-binding ligand N-linked glycoprotein] a collective term for members of a protein family that bind to and activate matrix metalloproteinases and overcome the inhibition of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases. Many of these proteins and the corresponding metalloproteinases are coexpressed in the same cell types, which include mineralized tissues but also salivary gland ductal cells and renal l tubule cells (Ogbureke and Fisher, 2005).
