[small intensely fluorescent cells]; also simply intensely fluorescent cells. The name refers to their content of numerous dense-cored granules as seen in electron microscopy. The cells belong to the sympathoadrenal lineage and therefore can be grouped together with adrenal medullary chromaffin cells, sympathetic neurons, and carotid body glomus cells, all of which are thought to be derived from a common progenitor, the sympathoadrenal progenitor cell or sympathicoblast (Patterson, 1990; Anderson, 1993).
