The gene for this protein has been identified by Gebe et al (1997). It displays extensive homology to CD5 and CD6 and belongs to the Scavenger receptor cysteine-rich (SRCR) family of proteins.
The gene is expressed in a variety of tissues (bone marrow, fetal liver, spleen, lymph node, thymus). It is not expressed in nonlymphoid tissues. SP-alpha has been shown to bind to some resting myeloid cell lines, and peripheral blood monocytes.
The protein is the same as AIM [apoptosis inhibitor expressed by macrophages], which is being referred to also as API6 [Apoptosis inhibitor 6]. The approved gene symbol is CD5L [CD5-like].
