[stage-specific embryonic antigen-1] This antigen is expressed at the morula stage in mouse embryos. It is considered to function as a cell-cell interaction ligand in the compaction process (Solter and Knowles, 1978; Gooi et al, 1981). SSEA-1 contains the Lewis X antigen (CD15) (Lindvall et al, 1987). SLX [Sialyl SSEA-1] would correspond to sialylated CD15 (CD15s).
SSEA-1 is expressed also in undifferentiated mouse F9 teratocarcinoma cells, which cease to express it after induction of differentiation (Kudo and Narimatsu, 1995). This disappearance is due to masking of the Lewis X
