abbr. SF (a term with multiple meanings). This factor is identical with HGF (hepatocyte growth factor) and is usually now referred to as HGF or HGF/SF (see: HGF for further information).
Scatter factor is produced by fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, epithelial cells, keratinocytes and various other cell lines. It was isolated initially and characterized as a factor that influences the motility of cells at picomolar concentrations.
Scatter factor disrupts desmosomal junctions between epithelial cells and induces a motile fibroblast-like phenotype in individual cells
