Semaphorin K1 is a member of the semaphorin gene family. Individual members of this family contribute to axon guidance by their repellent actions. The human gene has been identified by Xu et al (1998). The protein is associated with cell surfaces via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkage and does not bind to neuropilin-1 or neuropilin-2, the two receptors implicated in mediating the repulsive action of several secreted semaphorins. Semaphorin K1 is only expressed weakly during development but is present at high levels in postnatal and adult tissues, particularly brain and spinal cord. The murine counterpart has been cloned by Sato and Takahashi (1998).
The protein has been renamed SEMA7A (
