This protein has been identified originally as a 170 kDa integral membrane gelatinase (170 kDa melanoma membrane-bound gelatinase) the activity of which is blocked by serine protease inhibitors. The 170 kDa seprase dimer is proteolytically active but its 97 kDa subunit protein is not (Aoyama and Chen, 1990; Piñeiro-Sánchez ML et al, 1997).
