Sertoli cells, called also trophocytes or nurse cells (nursing cells), are the primary somatic cell type in the seminiferous epithelium. Fetal Sertoli cells are being referred to as pre-Sertoli cells. Pre-Sertoli cells induce cell proliferation, vascularization, and testis cord formation within the developing testis and also participate in the migration myoid cells, endothelial cells, and interstitial precursor cells into the gonads from the underlying mesonephros during development (Tilman and Capel, 1999; Schmahl et al, 2000; Martineau et al, 1997; Capel et al, 1999).
