[Shigella invasion plasmid antigen]
These antigens constitute a group of proteins encoded on a large non-conjugative plasmid (Maurelli et al, 1985; Sasakawa et al, 1988) found in all Shigella and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli strains (Hale et al, 1983, 1985; Kopecko et al, 1979; Sansonetti et al, 1981, 1982, 1983). Some of the encoded invasion plasmid antigens are virulence determinants and cooperate as invasins that facilitate entry of the pathogen into host cells as well as cell-to-cell spread. This is demonstrated by the observation that Shigella strains that have lost the plasmid are no longer capable of invading colonic epithelial cells
