Sib(a) is an alloantigen involved in platelet transfusion refractoriness (Saji et al, 1989). It is localized on platelet glycoprotein GPIb-alpha (Glycocalicin, GPIb-alpha). In the nomenclature of CD antigens the proteins has been given the designation CD42b. The Sib(a) alloantigen carries a methionine-145 residue instead of the usual threonine-145 and thus is identical with KO(a) (Murata et al, 1992). In the nomenclature for platelet antigens the designation for this alloantigen is HPA-2b [human platelet antigen-2b].
