These cells have been found originally in Spur cell anemia, a hemolytic anemia observed in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and other severe forms of liver disease (Duhamel et al, 1995). The cells are aberrant shape forms of erythrocytes (see also: discocytes) with irregular projections (see also: acanthocytes) and are characterized by an increased ratio of free cholesterol to phospholipid in the erythrocyte membrane (Cooper et al, 1975; Allen and Manning, 1996). Spur cells also show evidence of oxidative damage, and shortened survival resulting in hemolytic anemia (Allen and Manning, 1996).
