The bone marrow stroma consists of a variety of cell types, including macrophages, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, T-lymphocytes, monocytes etc. These cells provide a solid support upon which hematopoiesis occurs and are rich sources of secreted and membrane-bound hematopoietic cytokines that act on hematopoietic stem cells and early committed progenitor cells.
