abbr. SF (a term with multiple meanings). This name was given to a serum factor that stimulates incorporation of radiolabeled sulfate into proteoglycans of cartilage tissues (Salmon and Daughaday, 1957). The factor has been shown to be identical with a factor known earlier as one of the Somatomedins (Anonymus, 1975; Daughaday et al, 1972). It is known now as one of the insulin-like growth factors (see: IGF).
