[tumor-associated macrophages] These cells are macrophages that infiltrate tumors (see: myeloid suppressor cells). See also: TIL (tumor infiltrating lymphocytes).
Tumor-associated macrophages constitute a major functionally heterogeneous cell population (Biswas et al, 2013; Schmieder et al, 2012; Heusinkveld and van der Burg, 2011) in a tumor microenvironment and are thought to secrete growth and other factors that suppress adaptive immune responses and can promote cancer cell survival and metastasis, including the self-renewal of cancer stem cells, directly or indirectly through promotion, for example, of tumor angiogenesis
