[THAP domains]
The THAP domain [thanatos-associated protein domain] is defined by the presence of an evolutionarily conserved C2-CH (C-X2-4-C-X35-50-C-X2-H) zinc finger motif of approximately 90 residues with sequence-specific DNA-binding activity (Clouaire et al, 2001; Roussigne et al, 2003; Campagne et al, 2010).
Proteins containing this evolutionarily conserved protein motif are found across a wide spectrum of animal species. The absence of proteins with a THAP domain in plants, yeast, fungi or bacteria suggests that this novel protein motif is restricted to animals.
The biochemical function of the THAP domain is that of a zinc-dependent sequence-specific DNA-binding domain belonging to the zinc finger
