This murine T-helper cell line is used in bioassays to detect IL9. Growth and survival of these cells depend on IL9 and IL4 (Uyttenhove et al, 1988). The cells also respond to LIF (see: GATS, growth stimulatory activity for TS1 cells).
Transfection of the cytokine-inducible gene, mrg1 [melanocyte-specific gene-related gene], identified through mRNA differential display of mouse helper T-cells (stimulated/unstimulated with IL9), into TS1 cells converts these cells to growth through a non-autocrine mechanism, which makes them independent of IL9 (
