[Tectal cell]
These specialised cells of unknown function appear at birth in the outer part of the developing organ of Corti and form the roof of the outer tunnel of the organ of Corti. They appear to be an ultrastructurally distinct cell type (Henson et al, 1983) and may participate in the secretion of some components of the minor tectorial membrane, an extracellular matrix that provides mass loading on top of the organ of Corti, facilitating deflection of stereocilia (Rueda et al, 1993). Tectal cells have been classified previously as Hensen cells or modified Hensen cells or Deiters' cells, but lack the distinct morphological characteristics of either of these cell types.
