Tenecins

Tenecins are antimicrobial proteins belonging to the family of defensins.

Tenecin-1 is a protein of 43 amino acids (VTCDILSVEAKGVKLNDAACAAHCLFRGRSGGYCNGKRVCVCR). It contains three disulfide bridges required for bioactivity (Lee et al, 1998). Its expression is induced in the hemolymph of larvae of the coleopteran Tenebrio molitor following injection of Escherichia coli (Moon et al, 1994). Tenecin-1 inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria. Lee et al (1998) have identified an active fragment of Tenescin-1 corresponding to the C-terminal beta-sheet domain. This fragment is active against fungi, Gram-positive, and Gram-negative bacteria, whereas tenecin 1, the native protein, shows activity only against ... ... ... ... ...
