Testatin has been identified by Töhönen et al (1998). The protein is related to cysteine protease inhibitors known as cystatins. The protein is being referred to also as Cst9 [cystatin-9].
Testatin expression is restricted to fetal gonads and adult testis in the mouse. It is expressed during testis cord formation in pre-Sertoli cells, believed to be the site of the testis-determining gene Sry, at a time immediately after the peak of Sry expression. Testatin is thought to play a role in tissue reorganization during early testis development (Töhönen et al (1998).
