Theromyzin is an antimicrobial peptide from the coelomic liquid of the leech Theromyzon tessulatum. Theromyzin is an anionic 86 amino acid linear peptide. The peptide is active against Gram-positive bacteria. The gene is expressed in large fat cells in contact with coelomic cavities and the protein is immunodetected in large fat cells, in intestinal epithelia, and at the epidermis level. mRNA levels increase after blood meal ingestion and upon bacterial challenge, and a rapid release of the peptide into the coelomic liquid is observed after bacterial challenge (Tasiemski A et al, 2004).
