[Touton giant cell]
These multinucleated cells (Touton cells) (see also: giant cells), originally called xanthelasmatic giant cells (Aterman et al, 1988) have an abnormal size and a foamy cytoplasm. The multiple nuclei are frequently arranged in a wreath-like fashion. These cells represent aberrant lipid-laden tissue macrophages (histiocytes; multinucleated histiocytes) (see also: lipophages, foam cells) (note that lipid droplets are dissolved and removed during histologic processing. Frozen sections can be stained with lipid stains).
Touton giant cells are seen in lesions with high lipid content such as fat necrosis
