Trappin is an acronym for TRansglutaminase substrate and WAP motif-containing ProteIN. Trappins constitute a family of enzyme inhibitors containing a functional motif involved in binding of proteinases and possibly other proteins (WAP domain), and transglutaminase substrate motifs that can act as an anchoring sequence (Schalkwijk et al, 1999). The name trappin refers to the observation that these proteins can get trapped in tissues by covalent cross-linking.
The protease inhibitor elafin is a member of this family and has been given the name Trappin-2 by Zeeuwen et al (1996).
