This collective term has been used to refer to a heterogeneous group of T-cells that also develop in the thymus, although some subtypes can also develop extrathymically. These cells express semi-invariant T-cell receptors. Some of these cell populations can make up ~10 % of circulating T-cells and are thought to bridge the gap between innate immunity and adaptive immunity. In some tissues, some of the cells are the majority of T-cells. Some subpopulations recognise non-peptide antigens such as lipids, vitamin B metabolites and phosphoantigens, which can be derived from the host or from pathogens.
