[vascular-endothelial cadherin] This name has been given to cadherin-5, based on structural similarities to the cadherin family and the observation that the protein is expressed selectively in endothelial cells in blood and lymphatic vessels in a number of tissues. In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD144.
Expression of VE-cadherin cDNA in Chinese hamster ovary cells yields a 140 kDa protein that localizes to cell-cell boundaries, mediates calcium ion-dependent, homophilic adhesion (aggregation), and decreases permeability to high-molecular-weight molecules across CHO cell
