[Vascular endothelial growth factor-2] This factor was isolated in a cDNA sequencing project due to its homology to VEGF and PlGF (Hu et al, 1997). VEGF-2 mRNA is abundant in vascular smooth muscle cells and several highly vascularized tissues. The protein is secreted as a 52 kDa precursor and also as a 30 kDa amino-terminal and a 27 kDa carboxy-terminal cleavage product.
VEGF-2 has been shown to stimulate the growth of human vascular endothelial cells. It inhibits the growth of human aortic smooth muscle cells induced by PDGF.
VEGF-2 is the same as VEGF-C.
