[VHS domains]
(an acronym derived from the three proteins Vps27p, Hrs, and STAM, in which this domain was observed first) (Lohi and Lehto, 1998). This domain of approximately 140 amino acids is a right-handed superhelix of eight helices with charged surface patches probably serving as sites of protein-protein recognition and docking (Lohi et al, 2002). It is found in a variety of proteins together with other domains (SH3, FYVE domain) and in several proteins implicated in signaling from receptor tyrosine kinases. They are probably involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis (Misra et al, 2000). The VHS domain of GGA proteins (required for the targeting of mannose 6-phosphate receptor to the lysosome) has been shown to bind to an acidic di-leucine motif
