[very late activation antigen 4] Very late activation antigens are a family of heterodimeric transmembrane proteins that belong to the integrin family of cell adhesion molecules (Hynes, 1987; Ruoslahti, 1991). These antigens consist of a distinct alpha subunit non-covalently linked to a common beta subunit (ITGB1 [integrin-beta-1]). Their name refers to the observation that beta-chains increase in amount and additional alpha-subunits appear after long-term T-cell activation (Hemler et al, 1987).
Based on its identity with ITGA4 [integrin-alpha-4], VLA-4 is being referred to also as VLA-alpha 4 [
