[Ebola viral protein 24] This protein is encoded in the genome of Ebolavirus, which causes severe hemorrhagic fever in both humans and nonhuman primates, with fatality up to 90 %. The protein has been proposed to associate with membranes (Han et al, 2003), and is important for assembly and function of the viral ribonucleoprotein complex (Noda et al, 2007; Watanabe et al, 2007; Hoenen et al, 2010).
VP24 inhibits signaling downstream of IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, and IFN-gamma by sequestering karyopherin-alpha proteins (Reid et al, 2006). Binding to these proteins prevents them from shuttling activated phosphorylated STAT1 to the nucleus (Reid et al, 2006, 2007; Mateo et al, 2010).
