[V-set and transmembrane domain containing 2A] This protein, identified by Secco et al (2017) is expressed and secreted as an adipokine by committed white and brown pre-adipocytes. VSTM2A expression is elevated in the early phases of adipogenesis in vitro and adipose tissue development in vivo. VSTM2A expression is enriched in adipose precursor cells compared to mature adipocytes. VSTM2A-producing cells associate with the vasculature and express the common surface markers of adipocyte progenitors. Overexpression of VSTM2A induces spontaneous adipogenesis, i.e., differentiation of pre-adipocytes, whereas its depletion impairs this process. VSTM2A controls pre-adipocyte
