[V-set and transmembrane domain containing 2 like] This protein is encoded by open reading frame C20orf102 [chromosome 20 open reading frame 102]. VSTM2L is a secreted protein that is present in serum, and appears to be expressed selectively in the central nervous system. VSTM2L colocalizes with humanin in distinct brain areas as well as in primary cultured neurons, where it plays a role in the modulation of neuronal viability. VSTM2L has been shown to interact with humanin and acts as a strong antagonist of humanin neuroprotective activity (Rossini et al, 2011).
