[Vaccinia virus C16L protein] This protein is encoded in the genome of Vaccinia virus and promotes immune evasion and virulence (Fahy et al, 2008). C16 is expressed early during infection and localizes to the cell nucleus and cytoplasm of infected and transfected cells and diminishes the immune response and is an intracellular immunomodulator. A virus lacking C16L shows reduced virulence in a murine intranasal model. In the absence of C16, the recruitment of inflammatory cells in the lung and bronchoalveolar lavage is increased early after infection. Also, more CD4(+) and CD8(+) T-cells express the CD69 activation marker. Late after infection with the gene-deleted viruys there are fewer T-cells
