[Vaccinia virus C4L protein] This protein is encoded in the genome of Vaccinia virus and promotes immune evasion and virulence. The 37 kDa protein is expressed early during infection and localizes to both the cytoplasm and the nucleus. The protein inhibits activation of the pro-inflammatory transcription factor NF-kappa-B activation at, or downstream of, the inhibitor of kappa kinase (IKK) complex. C4 inhibits the translocation of the p65 NF-kappa-B subunit into the nucleus in response to IL1-beta. A virus with a deletion of the C4 gene grows normally in cell culture, but shows reduced virulence in a murine intranasal model of infection (Ember et al, 2012).
