[Vaccinia virus C6L protein] This protein is encoded in the genome of several Vaccinia virus. The C6L is presumably an immediate-early gene (Assarsson et al, 2008). Low levels of the protein are found also in intracellular mature virions (IMV) (Chung et al, 2006). The protein has been shown to bind to KRT4 [keratin-4], AIP1 [ALG2 interacting protein-1], and TNNI2 (troponin-1 type 2) (Zhang et al, 2009).
C6 is expressed early during infection and is present in both nucleus and cytoplasm. Mutant viruses lacking C6 expression replicate normally in cell culture but are attenuated in two in vivo models of infection.
