[Vaccinia virus K1L protein] This protein is encoded in the genome of Vaccinia virus. It is a virulence factor required for efficient replication of the virus in human cells (Drillien et al, 1981; Gillard et al, 1986). Shisler and Jin (2004) have reported a function in immunomodulation and immune evasion, showing that it inhibits the activity of the pro-inflammatory transcription factor NF-kappa-B by preventing the degradation of the endogenous inhibitor I-kappa-B-alpha. Meng et al (2009, 2012) have reported that Vaccinia virus K1L protein inhibits antiviral activities induced by type 1 interferons.
