also: Varicella zoster virus IE63. This immediate-early gene is encoded in the genome of Varicella zoster virus. The HSV-1 homolog is ICP22 [infected cell protein 22; infected cell polypeptide 22]. ORF63 encodes a 278 amino acid protein, which is located in the tegument of virions (Kinchington et al, 1995).
ORF63 is the most prevalent and abundant viral transcript expressed in latently infected human ganglia (Cohrs and Gilden, 2007; Cohrs et al, 2000). ORF63 protein is expressed prominently in neurons during both the productive and latent phases of infection Debrus et al, 1995; Lungu et al, 1998; Mahalingam et al, 1996).
