[Viral protein X] Vpx protein is an accessory protein encoded by certain lentiviruses that appears to have arisen together with the related Vpr protein from the duplication of a common ancestral precursor gene (Tristem et al, 1992). All known lentiviruses encode Vpr, but Vpx is restricted to human (HIV2, and various types of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) (Accola et al, 1999). Vpx is a non-structural viral protein that is present in significant quantities in the virion (Henderson et al, 1988; Horton et al, 1994).
Gibbs JS et al (1995) have reported a role of in virus replication and pathogenicity in vivo, showing in a rhesus macaque model that Simian immunodeficiency virus with a deletion of Vpx is attenuated. Rhesus monkeys
