X/A-like cells

[X/A-like cell]

These cells are known also as A-like cells or X cells (hence X/A) (Note: not to be confused with a class of retinal ganglion cells called also X cells).

These cells constitute a distinct population of endocrine cells in the oxyntic mucosa that make up approximately 20 % of all endocrine in the oxyntic gland (Sachs et al, 1997; Simonsson et al, 1988). X/A-like cells are round to ovoid cells with round, compact, electron-dense granules (Grube and Forssmann, 1979). They are found mainly in the oxyntic gland but also occur infrequently in the pyloric gland and small intestine. X/A-like cells have been shown to produce the hormone ghrelin (Date et al, 2000).
