The cDNA was isolated from a Xenopus laevis cDNA library prepared at the tailbud stage. The encoded protein of208 amino acids is similar (73.1 % overall homology) to XFGF-9.
XFGF-20 mRNA is expressed only zygotically in embryos at and after the blastula stage and expressed specifically in the stomach and testis of adults. Overexpression of XFGF-20 mRNA in early embryos causes abnormal gastrulation and suppresses development of anterior structures.
