[XTC mesoderm inducing factor] This heterodimeric factor, isolated from Xenopus laevis cells, is a member of the transforming growth factor-beta family (see: TGF-beta). Antibodies directed against TGF-beta-2 block the muscle inducing activity of XTC- cell conditioned medium.

The first inductive interaction in amphibian development is mesoderm induction, when a signal from the vegetal hemisphere of the blastula induces mesoderm from overlying equatorial cells.
