[yolk sac hematopoietic stem cells] Very primitive hematopoietic stem cells that arise in the yolk sac and may be derived from hemangioblasts. These cells have greater reproductive capability than hematopoietic stem cells obtained from fetal liver, umbilical cord blood, or adult bone marrow. They do not yet express major histocompatibility complex-associated antigens. Less than 100 cells/mouse are sufficient to reconstitute adult immunocompromised animals (Auerbach et al, 1996).
