also sometimes simply adaptive cells. This general term usually pertains to the two major cell types governing adaptive immunity, i.e., B-cells and T-cells. This term does not imply that adaptive immune cells do not contribute to functions of innate immune cells in innate immunity. For example, there is evidence that adaptive immune cells can temper initial innate responses (Kim et al, 2007; Tanriver et al, 2009) and that an insufficient number of T-cells can result in loss of control of innate immune responses (Zhao et al, 2009).
