alveolar brush cells
This cell type, called also type 3 alveolar epithelial cells, has been identified in rat lung by Kasper et al (1993, 1994). Alveolar brush cells (see also: brush cells) differ from flat Type 1 pneumocytes and cuboidal Type 2 pneumocytes by the presence of an apical tuft of microvilli and the absence of lamellar type secretory granules. They express high levels of cytokeratin 18 and also express villin.
