[antibody fusion protein]
These proteins (known also as immunoadhesins), are genetically engineered homodimeric proteins consisting of mouse or human antibody sequences and any other protein that suits a pharmacological purpose, including, for example, cytokines or receptors for cytokines, enzymes, toxins. Fusion proteins of monoclonal antibodies and cytokines are referred to also as immunocytokines.
These proteins join antibody specificities to nonimmunoglobulin sequences and provide a source of antibody-like molecules with novel properties. Because the adhesin portion of the chimaeric molecule possesses an unaltered binding capacity, the entire molecule recognizes the target receptors with high affinity and specificity.
