abbr. AiA. This term refers to cell death elicited in the local environment of a cell that undergoes cell death by apoptosis (see also: collective cell death). It is, therefore, an example of non-cell-autonomous death. Pérez-Garijo et al (2013) have reported that strong induction of apoptosis in one compartment of the Drosophila melanogaster wing disc causes apoptosis of cells in the other compartment. They have identified Eiger, the Drosophila tumor necrosis factor homolog, as the signal responsible for apoptosis-induced apoptosis and shown that other factors such as decapentaplegic or ... ... ... ... ...
