Apoptotic bodies, sometimes called also apobodies, are small sealed membrane vesicles that are produced from cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis. The formation of apoptotic bodies is a mechanism preventing leakage of potentially toxic or immunogenic cellular contents of dying cells and prevents inflammation or autoimmune reactions as well as tissue destruction.
The term apoptotic bodies has been used to describe both the larger, organelle-containing membrane-bound structures that come off cells undergoing cell death by, as well as the residual corpse remaining after surface blebs have separated (see: also: blebbing
