This term has been coined following the demonstration that growth factors immobilised on various matrices can mimic juxtacrine stimulation by membrane-anchored growth factors such as HB-EGF, EGF, TGF-alpha, TNF-alpha, or insulin (Chen et al, 1997; Ito et al, 1997, 1997; Li et al, 1997). Since such nondiffusional growth factors can be used to regulate cell functions such as proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis it has been suggested that they might provide tools for tissue engineering.
