Aureins are a family of 23 peptides (13-25 amino acids) isolated originally from the skin secretions of the closely related Australian bell frogs, Litoria aurea and Litoria raniformis. Of the 23 aurein peptides identified, 10 are common to both species (Rozek et al, 2000).
These peptides have been classified into 5 subgroups (aurein 1 (13 amino acids), aurein 2, aurein 3, aurein 4, aurein 5), which reflect sequence similarities (Rozek et al, 2000). Individual aureins are numbered further. Chen et al (2005) have cloned a range of aurein precursor transcripts, all of which contain a single copy of aurein preceded by a putative signal peptide
