a biochemically uncharacterized activity said to be present in the conditioned medium of a clonally derived diploid immortal cell line derived from Schwann cells, SCL 4.1/F7, obtained from neonatal Wistar rat Schwann cells in long-term culture by limiting dilution in liquid medium and selection for cells capable of continuous proliferation in the absence of mitogen cholera toxin. The cell line displays a characteristic flattened or crescent-shaped morphology, which changes into a differentiated (stellate/bipolar) morphology when the cells reach subconfluency or confluency. Cessation of growth and changes in morphology are said to be due to this autocrine
